4 Helpful Tips for Getting Rid of Coffee Breath

In 2020, the National Coffee Association shared that 70% of Americans drink coffee every week and 62% have a cup every day. Perhaps even more surprising, they also reported that the average American drinks more than three cups per day! So, if you indulge in this energizing beverage, you’re certainly not alone. You may also know that “coffee breath” can be quite unpleasant and result in you feeling self-conscious as you go throughout the rest of your day. Tip #1: Use a Straw

Using a straw won’t just help protect your teeth from staining, it will also prevent the coffee from coming into contact with your teeth, gums, and tongue. This may seem like a bit of a nuisance if you enjoy a piping-hot cup, but it will be well worth it. You can even get a reusable straw to help cut down on plastic waste!

Tip #2: Sip on Water Simultaneously

With each cup of coffee, you should have a glass of water. Sipping on H2O simultaneously will help prevent the residue from lingering (and keep you hydrated throughout the day!). It’s also a good idea to rinse your mouth thoroughly with water after you’re done drinking your coffee.

Tip #3: Brush Your Teeth Shortly After

Since coffee is acidic, brushing your teeth immediately can do more harm than good. To reduce your chances of developing tooth decay, you should wait about 20 minutes before completing your oral hygiene routine. Keeping an on-the-go dental hygiene kit will make this habit significantly easier to implement!

Tip #4: Chew on Some Sugar-Free Gum

Simply put, chewing gum will help stimulate saliva production, removing any lingering residue. It also will mask any odors that remain and give you the minty-fresh breath you desire. Just make sure to pick a sugar-free kind so you aren’t exposing your teeth to sugar for prolonged periods of time!
