What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a common sleep disorder that occurs when patients stop breathing for ten or more seconds at a time during sleep. There are two types of this disorder – central and obstructive. Central sleep apnea occurs when patients’ brains fail to trigger the body to breathe in and out. This form of the disease is extremely dangerous, and it will need to be treated immediately by medical professionals, neurologists, or surgeons in some cases. We will be happy to help you find the right professionals to treat this form of sleep apnea, but in most cases, this rare form of the disease requires more extensive treatment than we can provide. Obstructive sleep apnea is the more common of the two forms of the disorder, and it occurs when the airway is physically blocked.

Diagnosis for sleep apnea requires patients to undergo a sleep study. These studies can be conducted in a sleep facility or at home. The study uses electrodes to monitor the body for cessations in breathing. This information is then captured and converted into reports that are returned to your sleep doctor and/or our team where we can analyze whether or not you are suffering from sleep apnea.

If you are diagnosed with sleep apnea, the traditional treatment for your condition is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Unfortunately, this therapy isn’t ideal for many patients. In fact, people are often deemed CPAP intolerant, which means they are unable to adjust to the sounds and sensations associated with this method of treatment. For these patients, those who travel frequently, and those who do not receive adequate treatment with CPAP alone, oral appliance therapy may be a better option.

These oral appliances are custom crafted and comfortable. They shift the jaw forward slightly, allowing patients to sleep and breathe deeply. These oral appliances are a great treatment on their own for obstructive sleep apnea, and many patients find combined CPAP and oral appliance therapy beneficial for more severe cases of sleep apnea.
