Winter can mean a lot of wonderful things here in the Northeast. From peaceful snowfall to those clear, crisp evening skies, there\u2019s a lot to love about this season. But unfortunately, winter also means that other, not-so-fun season is upon us, too: cold and flu season. Staying healthy can be hard enough, but if you\u2019ll be navigating these chillier months with Invisalign<\/a>, you have some additional challenges to overcome. Here\u2019s how to keep your aligners germ free when you\u2019re constantly in contact with them!<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Keep it Clean<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the easiest and most effective ways to stop the spread of germs is frequent hand washing, especially during cold and flu season. However, if you use Invisalign, maintaining high cleanliness standards is even more important, because your hands must constantly go in and out of your mouth to remove and put on your aligners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, be sure you\u2019re rinsing your aligners well when you remove them and keep them stored in their case or a glass of aligner soak until you\u2019re ready to wear them again. Never allow them to touch tabletops, counters, or sinks, especially if you\u2019re not at home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, be sure to keep your teeth and gums clean as well. Don\u2019t forget to brush each time you eat or drink anything but water, floss them each time you eat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stay Hydrated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Dehydration can make you feel terrible even if you\u2019re not sick, so staying hydrated when you are is extremely important. Keeping a glass of water at the ready can help flush your system as well as keep your mouth moisturized, reducing your risk of gum disease and cavities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you are sick, be aware that certain medications could also increase your risk of dry mouth, and congestion can often cause mouth breathing to do the same thing. Thus, be sure to drink plenty of fluids to help protect your oral health and hygiene year-round, whether you\u2019re sick or not!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Sticky Situation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you do get sick, pay close attention to your medication. Some products like cold syrup contain a lot of sugar which can cover your aligners and your teeth, increasing your risk of cavities. If you are taking cough syrup, remove your aligners first, and then brush well before putting them back on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Remember, cold and flu season is only temporary, but with proper care, your beautiful smile can last a lifetime. Don\u2019t let winter sickness knock your orthodontic treatment off track! Follow these guidelines for keeping healthy with Invisalign all season long!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
